Escape from the Planet of the Apes

I'm working on a short comic strip based on one of my favourite films, 'Escape from the Planet of the Apes'. Here's a panel from it. I don't want to spoil how the film ends if you haven't seen it, but if you haven't seen it - what's wrong with you? Go and watch it immediately.

Meerkat

I absentmindedly doodled a meerkat - but it turned out OK. Well, its right, hind leg is a little dodgy and its snout is a bit too long , but other than that I quite like this little fellow.

London Luau

Back in 2007 I did a picture for the art exhibition for the London Luau which is a weekend of Tiki treats. But before the show opened, the gallery, I think it was the Truman Brewery, was broken into and a number of pieces were stolen. Mine was amongst the burglars' haul. This left me out of pocket, but hopefully I'll get a free ticket for the next one. Let's hope they do one this year as it's a great weekend, especially if, like me, you're a cocktail fan.

Meet the band

If I was in a band it would have to be full of aliens, robots, cat-suited super heroines and beehived ladies. A bit like this one. We'd just play lounge and super cool covers of cartoon theme tunes. I'd probably need to learn an instrument too.

AussieBum Valentine kangaroos

G'day! This is the other design in my St Valentine's series for AussieBum. It's a jolly kangaroo with a heart shooting out of her pouch. So get to their site and buy a pair immediately.

Draw Serge

The lovable illustrator Jonathan Edwards collects pictures of Serge Gainsbourg from anyone who fancies having a go at drawing him. I fancied a go and here is my Serge. Have a look at the rest of the Serges on his Draw Serge blog. Have a look at Mr Edwards' fantastic illustrations too while you're at it. Now I'm going to run all this text through a translation engine to give this post a more French feel.

Warwickshire's bear & ragged staff

The bear and ragged staff is the emblem of the fine county of Warwickshire and is a much under used symbol of the area. A while back, I did some work with Warwickshire County Council on using the bear as a mascot for their various youth schemes. But they never went with it. You can find out the coat of arms' history here if you want.

Golden Goose

I'm doing a bit of self promotion today by updating my postcard. If this doesn't have the masses clammering at my door to get artwork done, then I don't know what will.
If you're new to seeing the kind of thing I do you can have a look at www.philcorbett.com but I always put the latest work up here on the blog so feel free to follow it.
These seems like such a cold, serious post. Don't worry, I'll have some more underpant designs to show you soon.

At it like rabbits

Here's the AussieBum promo for the St Valentine's bunny briefs & boxers I designed. Those rabbits are really going for it... and you could too in a pair of these amazing underpants! I'm wasted illustrating, I should really be in copywriting with lines like those.

St Valentine's Day underwear

Hello Young Lovers wherever you are. It's only a month from one of the most commercial holidays of the year when romance is enforced on those people who have become trapped together in each other's company and are forced to buy meaningless chocolates and thoughtless flower selections for each other or face the anger of their partner. So if you feel you must buy a present as the greeting card corporations insist then you could do a lot worse that get down to the AussieBum shop and get some of these fantastic undies. Buy them now - you don't have to wait for these corporations to tell you when you should. Be romantic all the time!
Nothing sums up Valentine's day more than two rabbits at it! You've got the choice of red or blue and boxers or briefs. I can't believe AussieBum let me do this design for them. What am I saying? I've met some of their staff and of course they would - I'm just surprised we didn't hit this level sooner!

Kitten witch doctor

I could try and explain this, but I think it's all pretty self evident.

Moths

One of my favourite creatures is the moth. Furry insects that only come out at night- what more could you want? I really like the word 'moth' too. I did these chaps a while back for an Australian agency and I'm sure that moths over that neck of the woods can get massive - and probably become deadly too.

Kitten Parasites

I haven't updated my Kitten Parasite blog for over three months. So today I did. For those of you unfamiliar with my obsession with kittens and parasites allow me to explain:

A couple of years ago I wrote and illustrated a collection of poems about kittens with parasites. Unbelievably no publisher would touch it so I decided to self publish with the help of a friend of mine Bill Griffin. It did pretty well and I sold most of the 1000 run we printed. I do have a couple left so drop me a line if you want one and I think you may still be able to find it lying around most Forbidden Planets.

Here's an example of what to expect from the Kitten Parasites and you can follow their sporadic adventures here.

Hoosbehynde marsk

Like a motorbike helmet
With an eye for a visor
This parasite holds tight
With a powerful incisor.
The kitten mews loudly
But on the outside there's silence
Perfect soundproofing
Hides the internal violence.
Inside this cocoon
Is a horrible place
As a million small pincers
Torment the cats face.

Satyr with second face in its tummy

I went to Kenilworth castle today and for the first time in my three decades of going there, went into the Gate House. Well I have been before, but that was for a charity do where I had to use it as a changing room where I dressed up as Paddington Bear. This was the first time I'd gone on the tour.
Anyway, they had this strange creature carved into a dresser there. It looked like a satyr, but it had a second face in its tummy. The guide wouldn't let me take a photo so I've drawn it up to show you. Have you ever seen the like?

53 Squeeballs

Here's 53 types of Squeeball still at the prototype stage. Can you spot the lucky few who made it through into the final game? I wish the one with the udders would have. I also like the one which is inspired by the Flash Gordon lizard men with its eyes inside its mouth. Gordon's Alive!

Squeeballs in the UK

I was in Asda tody and noticed that Squeeballs was doing well in the Nintendo DS charts. I don't know if I've mentioned it, but I designed the characters for this game. Did I mention it? It's been out in the UK a few weeks now, but I haven't seen the Wii version in any shops here, which is far superior.
I found some old concept work I did for this game ages ago and here it is.

Top secret projects

It's hard finding work to post up on here as the nature of the industry requires that I'm always signing NDAs so I can't show anything until it is either out or canned. However, I did this picture for a potentially exciting project which I can't talk about but I notice that they've put the image up on the web so as it's now in the public domain I'm putting it up too.

Ben 10 Alien Force

I'm afraid that today's post is just me touting my wares for commercial gains. If you're after zombies and kittens come back here later. Otherwise, here's a bit of corporate work I did with Waste Creative for Cartoon Network. I designed some Ben 10 style aliens for the CN site's Ben 10 Alien Maker. I've posted this so you can see that I don't just draw zombies and kittens (although I usually do) and so that any creative agencies can see what a versatile and reasonably priced artist I really am. If you are such a creative agency check out the rest of my work and get in touch. Look here: www.philcorbett.com

AussieBum Double Take Underwear Promo

Well let's kick off 2010 with this promo video for my AussieBum range, 'Double Take'. Get them from the AussieBum site and make them become the best sellers of the decade so they'll ask me to do more designs for them.
